The South Node of Moon or simply the South Node is not a planet in actual but it is an imaginary point. It is a point in the orbital plane of earth around Sun where the orbit of Moon cuts it (or meets it). There are two such points. One is called The South Node and other is called The North Node of Moon. In Astrology these imaginary points (Nodes Of Moon) are considered as planets. These are exactly opposite points and always remain at 180° apart in exact opposite zodiac signs to each other. These nodes are very strong points and has great impact on human life and other worldly events on earth more than other planets. South Node does not own any Zodiac Sign. Its Sign of exaltation is Sagittarius and sign of debilitation is Gemini.

At the time of solar and lunar eclipses these Nodes of Moon coincides with the position of Moon. At the time of Solar eclipse the coincidal point casts shadow of Moon on earth and this shadow hides the Sun from our eyes on earth. Similarly at the time of Lunar eclipse the coincidal point at Moon receives the shadow of earth which hides the Moon from our eyes on earth. So due to this reason these are also known as shadow planets. In Western Mythology, South Node is known as Dragon Tail and North Node is known as Dragon Head. In many mythologies it is said that once Dragon had swallowed Sun and Moon and the God has saved them by cutting head of the Dragon.

In Indian Astrology, South Node is known as Ketu and North Node is known as Rahu. Though these are part of Dragon but are respected as Gods in Indian Culture and the story behind this is that in Indian Mythology it is believed that the head of Dragon was severed by Hindu God Vishnu after the Dragon has swallowed the nectar of immortality by cheating the Gods. Due to which The dragon became immortal. The severed Head of Dragon was called the Rahu and body part (Dragon Tail) was called the Ketu. Both Rahu and ketu became immortal because of nectar. These are considered very powerful and malefic Gods who helps Demons every time due to which in Indian Astrology these are considered as malefic planets. But in Western Astrology these are considered benefic planets. In Indian Astrology sign of exaltation for South Node is taken as Scorpio and sign of debilitation is Taurus. In transit motions it always transit in retrograde motion.

In predictive astrology it is very difficult to find the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of South Node as it is a very mischievious planet and can give exactly opposite results as predicted by an astrologer. The Astrologers with psychic and intutive powers can easily predict about the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the South Node. In practice it has been seen that it gives mixed results. It is considered as a spiritual planet exactly opposite to the nature of North Node which is against spirituality.
