Earth Signs
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn — the three signs of the material, the practical and the built.
Earth signs are traditionally read as the zodiac’s builders: grounded, patient, and oriented toward what can be touched, measured or finished. The temperament is matter rather than spirit or intellect — earth signs tend to trust results over promises.

The earth signs
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn share the earth element. Signs of the same element are traditionally read as sharing a basic temperament — the way they take in and give out energy — even where the rest of the chart differs.
How modality splits the earth signs
Element describes temperament; modality describes how a sign meets change. The three earth signs each carry a different modality, so no two of them express earth the same way.
- Taurus
- fixed — holds and sustains the element’s energy once it’s moving.
- Virgo
- mutable — adapts the element’s energy, bending it to whatever the moment needs.
- Capricorn
- cardinal — starts things, and initiates the element’s energy.
Traditional compatibility
Earth and water signs are traditionally described as compatible with each other, which puts the earth signs alongside the water signs. Treat this as a starting heuristic rather than a rule — a whole chart has far more to say about two people than their sun signs do.
