Water Signs
Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio — the three signs of feeling, intuition and depth.
Water signs are traditionally read as the zodiac’s feelers: intuitive, empathetic, and attuned to what is unsaid. The temperament is emotion rather than spirit, matter or intellect — water signs tend to know how a room feels before they can explain why.

The water signs
Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio share the water element. Signs of the same element are traditionally read as sharing a basic temperament — the way they take in and give out energy — even where the rest of the chart differs.
How modality splits the water signs
Element describes temperament; modality describes how a sign meets change. The three water signs each carry a different modality, so no two of them express water the same way.
- Pisces
- mutable — adapts the element’s energy, bending it to whatever the moment needs.
- Cancer
- cardinal — starts things, and initiates the element’s energy.
- Scorpio
- fixed — holds and sustains the element’s energy once it’s moving.
Traditional compatibility
Earth and water signs are traditionally described as compatible with each other, which puts the water signs alongside the earth signs. Treat this as a starting heuristic rather than a rule — a whole chart has far more to say about two people than their sun signs do.
