Aquarius compatibility

Traditional astrology reads compatibility from the elements before anything else. Aquarius is an air sign, so it is read as sharing a temperament with the other air signs and as pairing well with the fire signs.

Everything else falls outside that rule — which is not the same as being incompatible. It means the element heuristic has nothing to say, and the rest of two charts decides it. A sun sign is one placement out of ten.

Same element

The other air signs. Shared temperament — the same way of taking in and giving out energy, which reads as easy recognition and, just as often, as the same blind spot twice.

Paired elements

The fire signs, which the tradition pairs with air. Different temperament, held to be complementary rather than similar.

Outside the rule

Outside the element rule. The tradition offers no general verdict here, so neither does this page.

Why: the air and fixed families

Aquarius shares the air element with Gemini and Libra. Signs of the same element are traditionally read as sharing a basic temperament — the way they take in and give out energy — even where the rest of the chart differs.

Aquarius is fixed, alongside Taurus, Leo and Scorpio. Modality describes how a sign meets change: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs hold and sustain them, mutable signs adapt and let go. It cuts across the elements rather than following them, which is why two signs can share a temperament and still handle change differently.
